⚡️ Enlightening Bolts

🕸 A Buddhist Scientist on the Murmuration of Being: In his book Notes on Complexity, scientist Neil Theise draws on complexity theory, philosophy, and Eastern spirituality to propose that we and the universe are one interconnected whole, not separate entities - a perspective both scientifically grounded yet profoundly mystical. Bridging empiricism and metaphysics, Theise makes a fascinating case that we are the universe embodied and provides a mind-expanding reconsideration of what it means to exist. Read it here.

👁 The Importance of Beauty In The Ordinary: The modern world feels increasingly bland and soulless, but recapturing the lost concept of 'ordinary beauty' in simple public objects like buildings, signs, and libraries may rekindle our shared humanity and transform the urban spaces we inhabit daily. This thoughtful thread explores why aesthetic intention matters, even in humble things. Read it here.

🙏 A Man of Value

There’s a piece of wisdom from Albert Einstein that I’ve tried to follow for the better part of 10 years:

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.

Never lose a holy curiosity. Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value. He is considered successful in our day who gets more out of life than he puts in. But a man of value will give more than he receives.”

Over the years, I've come to understand the depth of these words. Many of us are tempted by the allure of outward success, chasing after the glitz and glamor, trying on different roles, and sometimes losing ourselves in the process. But what if the real key to success is not about the outer facade but about the inherent value we bring?

By centering our intentions on offering value – whether it's in our professional lives, our personal relationships, or our daily interactions – we start to create genuine connections. When we approach life with the mindset of "How can I contribute? How can I make someone's journey a little easier or brighter?" it transforms our actions and intentions.

True success, I believe, is not about a quid pro quo approach. It's about genuinely giving, seeking to uplift those around us without expecting a return. This genuine disposition of giving has opened more doors for me than I can count.

So, as you navigate through your week, I invite you to reflect on this: What value can you bring to the world today? How can you serve without expectation? It's in these acts that the true essence of success is found.

🏛 The Temple of Your Senses

Savor these words from the late John O'donohue:

“Awaken to the mystery of being here and enter the quiet immensity of your own presence.

Have joy and peace in the temple of your senses.

Receive encouragement when new frontiers beckon.

Respond to the call of your gift and the courage to follow its path.

Let the flame of anger free you of all falsity.

May warmth of heart keep your presence aflame.

May anxiety never linger about you.

May your outer dignity mirror an inner dignity of soul.

Take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention.

Be consoled in the secret symmetry of your soul.

May you experience each day as a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder.”

The meaning of déjà vu can be translated from French as “already seen.”

Déjà vu is the eerie sensation that you have already experienced something before, even though you know that you have not. For example, you are at a backdoor BBQ talking to one of your friends and they offer you a hamburger. All of a sudden, you get the very strange, yet strong, feeling of déjà vu — that is you have been in this exact place before complete with your friend offering you a burger in the exact same way. This sensation stays in the mind for around 10-20 seconds and then it vanishes and can’t be grasped again in the same way it originally hit you. But the sensation itself isn’t even the weirdest thing about déjà vu….

For starters, science has yet to come up with a reason as to why or how déjà vu occurs. Obviously it would be difficult to study this phenomenon because of the random nature of the occurrences. Anyone who has ever had a déjà vu (approximately 70% of the population) can tell you that it happens out of nowhere and doesn’t last for very long. So even with advanced brain imaging and other techniques used to study the brain, scientists have incredible difficulty putting their finger on the mystery and meaning déjà vu.
