šŸ¤Æ The AI Frontier

I have been researching artificial intelligence quite rigorously for the past few weeks. We are on the precipice of some major shifts in society due to this technology. No one can say for sure what the ramifications will be.

There are plenty of people beating the drum of caution, but I'd like to spend some time at the intersection of optimism and imagination.

We are on the verge of breaking down global language barriers. In the future, you'll be able to naturally and effortlessly have a conversation with someone who speaks a completely different language than you with real-time, bi-directional audio translation, with lips matching speech.

Children will be able to converse with their favorite fictional characters while being directly tutored by AI Einstein.

The means for producing all forms of media will become democratized. You will be able to singlehandedly create a documentary about a subject you love using AI assistance.

I'm barely scratching the surface of the possibilities. Again, there is reason to be cautious. But not just that. It's worth it to spend time pondering how we might change the world for the better.

šŸ‘ Emersonian Insight

Find illumination in the words of Ralph Waldo:

ā€œWhatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.ā€

ā€œWrite it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.ā€

ā€œCultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.ā€

A hand-picked classic HighExistence article.

ā€œBillions of years ago, you were a big bang, but now youā€™re a complicated human being. And then we cut ourselves off, and donā€™t feel that weā€™re still the big bang.ā€ ā€” Alan Wilson Watts, 1915ā€“1973

alan watts human nature identity

Alan Watts hardly needs an introduction.

For anyone who has ventured at all into the world of philosophy and spirituality, Watts is likely to be a household name.

In case youā€™re unaware, he was a British philosopher, writer, speaker, and one of the most iconic popularizers of Eastern philosophy in the Western world.

For many of us, olā€™ Alan was our first ā€œguruā€ figure, helping us see the world through new eyes and expanding our understanding of ourselves with his inimitably eloquent expositions.

Alan filled this role for me, at least, and Iā€™ll forever love him for all of the things he taught me.

Here at HighExistence, weā€™re colossal fans of Mr. Watts. Weā€™ve shared his powerful relationship advice; five of the greatest videos featuring his work; a collection of his most profound quotes; and one of his most marvelous essays on Zen.

Building on that legacy, today weā€™re going to share a lesser-known passage of Wattsā€™ā€”an explanation of mankindā€™s deepest identity, taken from one of his lectures.
