🎇 Image of The Week

"Theresa Lucas was driving toward the town of Bemidji in Minnesota when she snapped a photo to show her daughter how far away she was. Little could she have known that her quick picture would cause a sensation. That's because she didn't just record her location, but also some incredible storm clouds that create a mind-bending illusion.

The dramatic storm system actually looks like ocean waves crashing down into the sky. In fact, when first scrolling down, you may think that you are looking at a photo of the ocean, only to discover that there is a highway below. So what type of clouds are we looking at? It appears that they are a cloud formation called asperitus, which was actually only recognized by the World Meteorological Organization in 2017.

According to the International Cloud Atlas, asperitus clouds are “well-defined, wave-like structures in the underside of the cloud; more chaotic and with less horizontal organization than the variety undulatus. Asperitas is characterized by localized waves in the cloud base, either smooth or dappled with smaller features, sometimes descending into sharp points, as if viewing a roughened sea surface from below. Varying levels of illumination and thickness of the cloud can lead to dramatic visual effects.” Learn more here.

🙏 Unearthing Gratitude

That which is pervasive becomes invisible. Novelty is what we notice. This is why we take things for granted.

We forget we’re standing upon a wealth of blessings as our mind tracks the ebbs and flows, gains and losses.

So I invite you to really look around and take stock of all that you have.

All of the creature comforts you have that would shock the royals of ancient times. All the people in your life who have not yet left this earth. The capabilities and skills you possess and all the ways you continue to grow.

Find the beauty quietly residing beneath the quibbles and complaints.

Although we might suffer and endure difficulties, there is still so much to be grateful for. Do what you can to unearth that gratitude and offer it to others. It could mean more than you’ll ever know.

🌍 Overwhelming Oneness

Find awe in this expression from astronaut Edgar Mitchell:

"The biggest joy was on the way home. In my cockpit window, every two minutes: The Earth, the Moon, the Sun, and the whole 360-degree panorama of the heavens. And that was a powerful, overwhelming experience. And suddenly I realized that the molecules of my body, and the molecules of the spacecraft, the molecules in the body of my partners, were prototyped, manufactured in some ancient generation of stars. And that was an overwhelming sense of oneness, of connectedness; it wasn't 'Them and Us', it was 'That's me!', that's all of it, it's... it's one thing. And it was accompanied by an ecstacy, a sense of 'Oh my God, wow, yes', an insight, an epiphany."

⏳ From The Archives

A hand-picked classic HighExistence article.

The best advice that author Neil Gaiman ever received was from one of his idols: Stephen King. In response to the success of Neil’s Sandman comics, Stephen King told him, “This is great. You should enjoy it.”

But he didn’t.

It was the best advice that he ever got, which he ignored.

Instead, he worried.

Worried about the next deadline, the next idea, the next story.

And there was not a moment for the next 15 years that Neil stopped and enjoyed the ride.

But in his commencement speech at the University of Arts in 2012, Neil shared his regret about this as well as the most important lessons he wished he knew starting out as a writer and a freelancer.

Hopefully, these 6 lessons will help you let go and enjoy the ride wherever you’re at in the creative journey.
